Ruby’s Fight

40 year old, Officer Ruby Roman, a 13 year veteran of the Houston Police Department was diagnosed with Stage 4 metastatic lung cancer after going to the doctor for a persistent cough. The CT identified a large lung mass, later confirmed to be non-small cell cancer. Her follow up studies identified metastasis to her spine, hips, and lymph nodes. She was sent home and told to enjoy her family for the next six to 12 months.
Being the amazing mom of 2 boys (4 and 8 years) she chose to fight this horrible disease, and has elected to begin chemotherapy with aggressive radiation. She is not going to accept that 12 month diagnosis. She is a true blue fighter!
A follow up MRI has revealed the cancer had spread to her brain, shortening her original 12 month diagnosis. Still unwilling to give up, she has begun her aggressive treatment in early September.  In the first week of September, Ruby was hospitalized with a collapsed lung, that had filled with fluid due to her aggressive cancer treatments.Officer Will Davis, her husband, is also a Houston Police Officer out of SW Command, and has lost both parents to cancer. He has chosen to stay home with her and the boys, burning all of his vacation and sick time.
Ruby and Will are also the primary caregivers for Ruby’s parents and ensure their health, financial management and oversight of their home. This diagnosis has limited their ability to fully provide for them and of course, themselves.
